Dream Interpretation: Part 8 — Spiritual Warfare Dreams

You may experience dreams where you are in conflict or battle, and you see yourself subduing those who are fighting against you. These are spiritual warfare dreams. They may be unpleasant or scary at the time, but God is showing you that you are meant to overcome.

2 Corinthians 2:14 says, “Now thanks be to God, who always causes us to triumph in Christ ….” 1 John 4:4 reminds us, “You are of God, little children, and have overcome them, because greater is He who is in you, than he who is in the world,” and Revelation 12:11 assures us, “They overcame [the devil] by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony ….” There are many such verses. We must find them, believe them, and learn to war with them.

So, battle dreams can actually originate with God. Dreams of cops and robbers, Western shootouts, or snipers trying to get you can indicate stress you are currently experiencing or spiritual warfare that you are engaged in during your waking hours. Our dreams often express current events in our lives in picturesque ways.

But if you are experiencing dreams of being terrified as you are being chased, or being beaten, murdered, or otherwise seriously harmed, those are demonic dreams. Dreams of being choked, being engulfed in a fearful, thick darkness, or having a suffocating cloak thrown over you are demonic. These types of dreams are usually due to some kind of an open door in your life.

The open door could be stuff you have in your house, such as pagan artwork — Buddha statues, for instance. Souvenirs from foreign nations where witchcraft is prevalent could have curses attached. Movies, games, and books dealing with the occult, such as Harry Potter and Twilight, could provide an open door into your life. Willful sin compromise leaves us vulnerable to attack as well. Yoga is an open door to the demonic realm — whether you practice the meditation activities that go with it or not. If you have ever dabbled in the occult, even if you stopped long ago, and have never renounced that occult activity, you will need to do so. For more information on how, please see my article, What Well Are You Dipping From?

  3. I dreamt a voice told me the numbers for the lottery, which I wrote down. I noticed that so far, if I played those numbers I would have won 20 to 80 dollars at least twice. Now what’s that all about?

    • Hi Sarah,

I would suggest sitting with the Lord and asking Him for understanding about the dream. Try to recall if there were any other happenings in the dream, or if the voice saying the numbers was the entire dream. If there were more details, that would help in understanding if there is a hidden message God is trying to get across. He may be talking about something other than the lottery, and just using that idea to get another point across.

Not all dreams are from the Lord, so that is something to pray about and discern as well.

Although gambling is not specifically forbidden in the Bible, the principles of stewarding money well for the Lord, not cultivating a love for money, and not trying to gain money hastily without laboring for it, are all strong themes in the Word. And so many people who gamble once get hooked, so beware the snare, and look for guidance and clarity from the Lord.

I’m sorry that I don’t have a more specific answer for you, but perhaps as you inquire of the Lord, He will clear up your questions. 🙂

      Blessings,
      Lee Ann

      • I dreamt of a lot of coffins that were open, there was a fight with a few unknown people. At some stage I was choked by an unknown male who was topless. Someone else had to wake me up. As I looked at this person it was as if he was drawing strength from a particular coffin which was empty.
I am so confused as to what this means as I was fasting during this period. My neck was even sore when I woke up it was as if I had really been choked.

        Any thoughts on this?

      • Hi Londi,

I think the best way to talk this through is via e-mail. If you can e-mail me your dream, with as many details as possible, I will take a look at it, and we’ll see what we come up with. leeann@leeannrubsam.com.

    • Hi Chris,

About the 2nd part of your comment — having dreams that prove to be true in real life: Dreams are one of the ways God speaks to us, and they are a vehicle for the prophetic gifts to manifest. It sounds like in your dreams you are experiencing the word of knowledge, probably so you can pray for the people who those things are happening to.

The 1st part, about the sex dreams — Anyone might have a sex dream from time to time, but 2-3 times a night is a lot, and not normal. Obviously, if you are currently dabbling in pornography or casting your eyes where they should not be, that needs to stop. Ask the Lord to forgive you for any past pornography or lust. But you should also take steps to sever the ties with any spirit of lust which may have gotten a foothold in your life through past sexual sin. After asking forgiveness of the Lord, verbally renounce the evil spirit of lust / pornography / sexual impurity, and verbally break its hold over you by commanding it to leave and not return, in the name of Jesus. State that the blood of Jesus stands between you and it, so that it cannot trouble you anymore. James 4:7 says, “Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.” Jesus is “the Deliverer” (Romans 11:26), and “If the Son therefore shall make you free, you shall be free indeed” (John 8:36).

If you have ever been molested, that can be an open door to an evil spirit which must be closed as well. You can use the same step of renouncing the evil spirit that I mentioned above, and that may be enough to stop the dreams. However you may need extra help from a Christian counselor and/or minister who understands the activity of evil spirits in connection with this trauma. Please seek additional help, if need be.

If the steps I have suggested do not alleviate the problem, definitely seek pastoral help and the support of other believers to help you.

      Blessings,
      Lee Ann
