The Godhead Together
God’s integrity is impeccable. Titus 1:2 speaks of our hope of eternal life being absolutely certain, because “God, who cannot lie” has promised it to us since before the world began. Hebrews 6:18 states that “it is impossible for God to lie.”
Our present society is immersed in relativism — the belief that “there are no absolutes” and that “your truth may be different than my truth.” However, as much as relativists may hate to admit it, we are surrounded by many absolutes — the laws of gravity and conservation of matter, for instance. God’s truthfulness is an even greater absolute than the scientific laws of nature. He will not lie, because He cannot. Lying is outside of His nature. In John 8:44, Jesus stated that the devil is the father of lies.
What does God’s absolute truthfulness mean for us? Simply that what He speaks can be counted on completely. He says what He means. He does not play bait-and-switch games with us. He does not tease us with a promise and then change His mind and take it back. If it is in the Bible, it is rock-solid. If it is a personal promise to us which truly was spoken to us by the Lord, it is also rock-solid. (However, we must be certain we have heard and interpreted what He has said correctly, because we are prone to making mistakes in our hearing.) God’s promises are often conditional on our following through in obedience (and He states this in His Word), but if we have a heart that trusts and goes after Him, we will see our promises come to pass.
If we truly understood the truthfulness of God, along with all the other goodness of His nature, there would never be any reason to doubt, worry, or fear. God wants us to come into such a deep understanding of His character that there is no question in our minds about whether He will come through on our behalf. We can rely on Him, for “God is not a man, that he should lie, neither the son of man that he should repent [change his mind]. Has he said, and shall he not do it? Or has he spoken, and shall he not make it good?” (Numbers 23:19). He is truth.
